Insulin Injection Sites

Knowing where to inject and how to rotate your injection sites is very important. If you do, your injections will be more comfortable and your insulin will be absorbed into your body better. Choose injection sites that are easy to reach when you inject. The main injection sites are:

Diabetes Insulin Injection Sites

Rotating injection sites

  • Do not mix site and time. Insulin is absorbed at different rates at different injection sites. You should always inject in the same area at the same time of the day.
  • For instance, if it has been recommended you inject your morning insulin in the abdomen, you should never give your morning injection in the thigh or elsewhere, but always in the abdomen. How many of the different sites you use will depend on how many insulin injections you do each day.
  • Change sides alternating from the right side to the left side. For example, inject in your right thigh one day and your left thigh the next day.

Rotate within sites. Make sure you do not inject in the same place as the previous injection. Move the place of your injection by about a finger's width from the last injection point.
