Keep Kids Safe This Summer

The New Mexico SAFE Kids Coalition wants to remind parents to be safe this summer! Parents can help their kids with these summer safety tips:

  • Watch your children when they are around water, such as swimming pools, lakes, and streams.
  • Buckle your child in a car seat (infants and toddlers), a booster seat (most children 5 to 8 years old), or your car’s seat belt (for older children and adults), even if you are not going far.
  • When your child is riding a bike, make sure he or she wears bright-colored clothes or shoes. Check that bikes have reflectors so drivers can see them at dawn, dusk, or in bad weather.
  • Does your child’s bike helmet fit well? Go over the rules of the road with your kids.
  • Remind your kids to drink lots of fluids while outside. Don’t drink fluids that have a lot of sugar. It is best to drink water during the hot summer months.
  • Go over your family fire escape plan now that your kids are home for the summer.
