Autumn: A Great Time to
Enjoy the Outdoors
The air is crisp,
and nature is coloring the landscape in reds, oranges, and golds. It’s the
perfect setting for families to enjoy the outdoors.
Outdoor recreation has benefits including the prevention or reduction of stress and improved self-esteem, confi dence, creativity, and spiritual growth. Getting outside provides physical benefits such as aerobic, cardiovascular, and muscular fitness.
Here are some ideas:
- Visit your local Metro Park. The Metro Parks of Ohio offer many programs, workshops, and events. Many of the parks have nature paths for walking or jogging, which is good aerobic exercise.
- Create your own “event.” Have your children go to the library and take out a book on different trees. Then get the family together, take the book to the park, and see how many trees you can identify. You will get some fresh air and exercise and enjoy all of the fall colors!
- Fall festivals are another way for families to have fun together. These events usually have games for the kids and good food for everyone.
- Have a wiener roast at your local park or in your own backyard! Give the kids a part in planning the food and cooking the hotdogs. Then sit around the fire, roast marshmallows, and tell ghost stories (no TV or game boards!).
- Attending community events is another great way to enjoy your family time. You also get to visit with your neighbors and support the efforts of your neighborhood.
