Keep Your Family Safe This Summer

Summer is a great time to have fun with family and friends. Remember to be safe, too!

Water Safety

Young children can drown in only two inches of water! Be sure to keep an eye on your kids whenever they are in or near water. Pools, ponds, lakes, and oceans are not the only sites for drowning. Young children can drown in toilets, bathtubs, and buckets filled with water.

Sun Safety

You and your children can burn quickly in the sun. Sunburns hurt and raise a person’s risk of skin cancer. It is best to avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. The sun is hottest during this time. Use sunscreen with an SPF (sun protection factor) of 15 or more to block rays from the sun. Do not use on babies younger than 6 months old.

Fire Safety

Burns can occur from barbecues or fire pits. Keep your little ones away from the grill. Be aware of dry brush. Do not throw matches or burning cigarettes on the ground. Be especially careful with fireworks around the 4th of July.

Car Safety

Do not lock or leave your children in the car for even a short time. You might think you are running into the store for only a few minutes. But this short trip can easily turn into five or eight minutes. This is long enough to let heat rise dangerously high inside a locked car. It becomes like a hot oven, and children can die from the high temperature.
