Molina Healthcare of Michigan recently honored seven local heroes for their genuine passion and extraordinary volunteerism at its 11th annual Community Champions Awards ceremony in Detroit. At the event, each Champion, who was nominated by their community peers, received a trophy and a $1,000 grant to donate to a nonprofit of their choice.

This year’s Community Champions are as follows:

  • Khali Sweeney, founder of Downtown Boxing Gym Youth Program, a free after-school safe haven for Detroit children.
  • Susan Kattula, who has a passion for serving those who have been afflicted by ailments or illnesses, including the visually and hearing impaired or those who have fallen on hard times.
  • Erin McLoughlin, a volunteer with Alternatives for Girls, a Detroit nonprofit dedicated to helping teens and women engaged in high-risk activities transition to making safe and healthy choices.
  • Alex Fuller, owner of The Fuller Cut Barbershop, which gives discounts to children who read books aloud to their barbers while getting their hair cut
  • Juani Olivarez, an advocate for Flint’s Hispanic community and a critical resource during the city’s recent water crisis.
  • Chef Mark and Deb Prentiss, co-founders of Rising Stars Academy, a service organization designed to reach life skills to special education students.

The Community Champions Awards was established in memory of Molina Healthcare’s founder, Dr. C. David Molina. The program highlights the importance of helping those in need and recognizes every day heroes who work tirelessly to make the world a better place to live in.
