Molina Brings Bird Tales to Residents With Dementia and Alzheimer’s

11/02/2017

Throughout the month of October, Molina Healthcare of Texas’ Nursing Facility Community Engagement Team partnered with the Audubon Society to bring a unique program called “Bird Tales” to nursing facilities in El Paso, Houston, San Antonio, Hidalgo and Dallas. Bird Tales is a sensory-based activity that utilizes small bird models to stimulate the long-term residents and members’ senses of sight, hearing and touch. The program was initially designed for individuals with dementia, but can be tailored to accommodate a broader range of cognitive levels.

Some of the birds included species of cardinals and hummingbirds. Some residents were taken back to their youth as they recalled raising wild turkeys on a farm or feeding ducks in the park.
