Molina Makes a Difference for Hundreds of Orangeburg Students

11/13/2017

In celebration of the 25th annual National Make a Difference Day, Molina Healthcare of South Carolina recently hosted an educational event for the entire student body of Orangeburg’s High School of Health Professions. A panel of medical providers answered questions asked by the high school’s seniors. Members of Claflin University’s Pre-Med Club and science students also attended to hear the panelists share their experiences and challenges. They also provided practical advice for the students in an effort to motivate them to work hard and strive for success in their future academic and professional endeavors.

This event featured the following speakers:

  • Reba Cartee, Director of Healthcare Services at Molina Healthcare of South Carolina
  • Bryan Connor from high school-based wellness program Project Excel
  • Marylou Stinson, Senior Quality Improvement Specialist at South Carolina Office of Rural Health
  • Dr. Jack Colker, Medical Director of Emergency Services, Regional Medical Center, Orangeburg, S.C.
  • Carl Grove, Director of Pharmacy, Regional Medical Center, Orangeburg, S.C.
  • Dr. Charles Kilgore, Pediatrician, Regional Medical Center, Orangeburg, S.C.

After the panel, the high school students traveled back to their campus to plant a new school garden alongside faculty and Molina Healthcare employee volunteers. Molina’s garden donation included four raised garden beds made of food-safe cedar, a folding trellis, drip irrigation kit, garden soil, compost, gardening tools including gloves and trowels, seeds to last one year and more. The goal was to create an inspiring space for the students and to encourage them to participate in outdoor activities.
