Cold and flu season is right around the corner – here’s what you need to know to stay safe, healthy and happy!

It’s that time of the year again – the time when your chances of getting the flu go up. But you can reduce your chances by getting the flu shot. If you do get the flu, learn what you can do to reduce the severity.

First, you can do daily things to stop the spread of germs. These include:

  • Avoiding close contact with anyone who is sick.
  • Covering your nose and mouth when you cough and sneeze.
  • Washing your hands often with soap and water. You can also use an alcohol-based sanitizer.
  • Avoiding touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread easily this way.
  • Cleaning and disinfecting surfaces and objects that might be contaminated

Because the flu is a severe illness that can lead to a hospital stay, it’s recommended that you get a flu shot every year. Getting the flu shot not only protects you, it protects your loved ones and everyone around you. It also reduces doctors’ visits, missed work and missed school.

Different flu vaccines are approved for use in different groups of people:

  • There are shots approved for children as young as six months old and adults at least 65 years old.
  • Flu shots are also recommended for pregnant people and people with certain chronic health problems.
  • A nasal spray flu vaccine is approved for use in non-pregnant people between the ages of 2 and 49. People who are pregnant or have certain health problems should not get the nasal spray flu vaccine.

You can get a flu shot from places like:

  • Your doctor’s office
  • Health clinics
  • Pharmacies

Talk to your doctor. They can help you find the right vaccine for you and your loved ones.

The flu can be prevented. Stop the spread. Do your part to protect yourself and everyone around you this season.
