A new research study from Michigan State University confirms that 34 percent of dog owners are more likely to get the recommended 150 minutes of exercise as opposed to those without dogs. Studies show that a dog’s enthusiasm and boundless energy can help motivate you to workout by feeding off their energy. Just a 20 minute walk with your pup can help you burn up to 68 calories.

Here are some fun physical activities you can do with your furry friend:

  • Running – Dogs can help you keep pace while running or jogging because of their one-track mind. Try to keep your run under 5 miles, especially if you have a flat-faced breed (i.e. Boston Terrier). If you have a small dog, don’t worry, they have more energy than bigger breeds and can definitely keep up.

  • Cycling – This is suggested for more energetic dogs. In other words, if your dog loves to run this might be a good activity for the both of you. Be sure to use a leash that is meant for attaching to bikes so as to avoid tangling.

  • Rollerblading – Better to try this workout if you are a skilled inline skater because your dog might not realize that you can’t keep up when he races after that squirrel.

  • Yoga – Your pal will be there more for emotional support during this activity but there’s certainly nothing wrong with that!

  • Active Fetch – While your dog is running to fetch the ball you can squeeze in some moves like squats, lunges, or crunches.

  • Play a game – Games like soccer or tug of war are great activities that both of you will love and they’re fun so you won’t even realize you’re working out.
