Improving your diet can be a daunting task. Luckily, there are a number of free apps that provide helpful information on everything from healthy recipes to the nutritional information of our favorite foods. For those of us that are constantly connected, these applications are valuable and convenient tools to help educate ourselves on a healthy lifestyle. Read more about the apps below and then download those that will help you on your path to good health!

Eat and Move-O-Matic

Platform:  Apple

This app allows users to compare calories consumed with the time it takes to burn them off through activity.  It includes a wide range of physical activity options and provides tips for healthier food alternatives that are typical to the American diet. Unfortunately, users are not able to enter biometrics for a more personalized calorie estimate.  The app is fun and engaging (great for kids) and designed to teach the user about the relationship between food and exercise.

If you want to learn more about the foods you are buying, this is a great app.  This app enables you to scan the barcode on packaged foods, and by interpreting the food labels, provides you with a grade (A, B, C, or D) based on various health aspects so you can choose healthier alternatives.  If you scan a product that is not in the database, it allows you to take a picture of the package information and submit for analysis and the information is added to the database.  The website portion of Fooducate is great as it provides a wealth of information. It should be noted that the app is based mostly on people’s opinions and not on advice from experts.  Fooducate also has apps for persons living with diabetes and food allergies.  

Weight Watchers mobile

Platform:  Apple and Android

The free portion of the app includes recipes, articles on food and exercise, cheat sheets and success stories.  You must be a member of Weight Watchers to access the other features such as the step-by-step Weight Watchers plan, how to find local meetings, creating shopping lists, ability to log in “points” and physical activity as well as the ability to scan items in the supermarket to identify their point values.   

Calorie Counter & Diet Tracker by

Platform:  Apple and Android

This app is similar to the many weight loss apps available in that it allows users to input weight loss goals, calorie intake and output (exercise), add to the food library and track progress.   However, the nutrient analysis allows users to build a personalized eating plan based on nutrients that are consistently missing in their diet.
