Dancing for Heart Health in Bellevue

02/27/2014

As part of American Heart Month, hundreds of people danced to create awareness about heart health at Lake Hills Elementary School on Tuesday, February 11.

“We were thrilled to partner with so many Bellevue community partners to offer a fun and cost-effective way to promote heart health,” said Jorge Rivera, community outreach director for Molina Healthcare. “It was great seeing so many people being active, showing everyone how simple and fun a little exercise could be.”

Participants also had the chance to win raffle prizes including one of three bicycles. Raffle tickets were “purchased” by visiting a number of heart healthy interactive stations.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in Washington, one in four deaths per year is due to heart disease. Many of the risk factors for heart disease, such as family history, cannot be influenced, but there are ways to minimize risk including: eating a healthy diet, exercising and maintaining a healthy weight, reducing stress, quitting smoking, limiting alcohol and taking medication. Dancing is a fun and cost-effective way to generate health benefits that requires no equipment and anyone can do. It is an activity that can help regulate body weight and build cardiovascular endurance.
