Nursing Facility - Pre-admission Screening and Resident Review (PASRR)

Pre-admission screening and resident review (PASRR) of mentally ill and mentally retarded individuals is a screen to determine whether residents will need the level of services furnished in a nursing facility and specialized services based on mental illness or mental retardation. Prior approval is required.

The PASRR function is the responsibility of the Department of Health (DOH). The review will determine whether the resident requires a specific level of care, if a diagnosis of serious mental illness or mental retardation is present, assess whether specialist services for mental illness or mental retardation are needed, and prevent inappropriate placement in a nursing facility.
