September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is now the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. 988 is the new three-digit number to use if you or someone you know is thinking about suicide. People can call, text or chat by dialing 988 or going to 988lifeline.org.

If you or someone you know is at risk for suicide, there’s a new, easier way to get help.

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is now the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. 988 is the new three-digit number to use if you or someone you know is thinking about suicide. People can call, text or chat by dialing 988 or going to
988lifeline.org. They’ll be connected right away with a trained counselor from the Lifeline network.

The previous Lifeline phone number (1-800-273-8255) will always be available to people in emotional distress or suicidal crisis.

What can you do if someone is at risk?

Have an honest, private conversation

  • Listen to their story
  • Tell them you care about them
  • Ask them directly if they are thinking about suicide
  • Encourage them to get help from a doctor or therapist, or by using the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline
  • Don’t debate the value of life, minimize their problems or give advice

If a person says they are considering suicide:

  • Take them seriously!
  • Stay with them
  • Remove any lethal means
  • Help them find and get to a mental health services facility or an emergency room

Remember! You are not alone. Help is always available. If you or someone you know needs help, please, call or text 988 or go to 988lifeline.org to chat.
