How Medicaid eligibility works

The California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) runs Medi-Cal, California's Medicaid program. To qualify, you must live in California, be a U.S. citizen or qualified immigrant, have or apply for a Social Security number and meet income limits. Some people qualify because of age, pregnancy, disability or need for long-term care.
