You may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period if you had a life event like marriage, birth or adoption, moving, losing coverage, turning 26, release from jail and more.

When can you enroll?

You can enroll, renew or change your plan during the Open Enrollment Period, which spans October 15 through December 15 each year.

You may be able to enroll at other times if you have a qualifying life event. This is called a Special Enrollment Period.

Qualifying life events include:

  • Getting married or entering a domestic partnership
  • Having, adopting, or fostering a child
  • Moving to a new area
  • Losing health coverage
  • Exhausting COBRA coverage
  • Turning 26
  • Leaving a college health plan
  • Returning from active-duty military service
  • Release from jail or prison
  • Becoming a U.S. citizen, national, or lawfully present individual
  • Changes in tax credit eligibility

How to renew or update:

  • During Open Enrollment, review your plan and make changes if needed.
  • If you have a life change, go to Healthcare.gov to see if you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.

If you believe there was a mistake with your enrollment or application, you may be able to appeal.
