How Medicaid eligibility works

Iowa Health & Human Services (HHS) runs Iowa's Medicaid program. They decide if you qualify. You must live in Iowa, be a U.S. citizen or qualified immigrant, have or apply for a Social Security Number and meet income limits. Some people qualify because of age, pregnancy, disability or need for long-term care. HHS makes the final decision.

Common groups include:

  • Adults ages 19 to 64 who are not already getting care
  • Children and teens
  • Pregnant women
  • Relatives or friends who take care of us
  • People who are 65 years or older
  • People who have difficulty with vision or have a disability
