Your Medicaid or CHIP Eligibility and Enrollment in Texas

Learn who qualifies for Medicaid or CHIP in Texas, how to sign up for Molina and how to renew your benefits.

Key Points

Medicaid is health insurance paid for by the government. If you qualify, your coverage is available at no cost. Molina does not decide if you can get Medicaid. Eligibility is decided by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission.

How Medicaid and CHIP eligibility works

In Texas, the Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) reviews your application and decides if you qualify for Medicaid or CHIP. You can check your eligibility and sign up at Your Texas Benefits or by calling 211.

How to get started:

  • Check eligibility online at Your Texas Benefits or call 211.
  • Sign up online, by mail with a paper form, by phone or at a local HHS office or community partner.
  • HHSC will mail you a letter to let you know if you are approved.
  • After approval, you will choose a health plan to provide your Medicaid or CHIP benefits. This is when you can choose Molina. If you get an enrollment packet, follow the steps to pick Molina.
  • If you do not select a health plan, HHSC will choose one for you.
  • Once you join Molina, we will mail your welcome packet and your ID card within five days.

Renew each year: HHSC will send you a packet to renew your Medicaid or CHIP benefits. Look for an envelope that says “time sensitive.” You can also renew online at Your Texas Benefits. If you move, call 211 to update your address so you get your mail.
