Molina Healthcare of Virginia and Scholastic Donate Summer Reading Books to Petersburg Elementary School Students

06/16/2023

PETERSBURG, VA – June 16, 2023 – The MolinaCares Accord (“MolinaCares”), in collaboration with Molina Healthcare of Virginia (“Molina”), recently donated books to 400 students at the Westview Early Childhood Education Center (“Westview”) campus on June 14 to support childhood literacy in Petersburg. The book distribution was made possible by Molina’s partnership with Scholastic Corporation (“Scholastic”) as part of its Summer Reading Program.

Through the program, Westview students, ranging from ages 3 to 4, received five books each to help them start an at-home library. The donation comes as Virginia invests $30 million to combat learning loss. A report found early literacy in the state was at a 20-year low in the period coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Reading ability and enjoyment from an early age are contributing factors to one’s development and future success,” said Angela Taylor, director of growth and community engagement for Molina Healthcare of Virginia. “Molina is proud to partner with Westview and Scholastic to help children hone their reading proficiency and explore fun, new stories during their summer break.”

“Keeping students on the right path and engaged in summer reading is vital to maintaining early student literacy through the summer months and preparing them for the next year ahead,” said Stacie Parham, principal of Westview Early Childhood Education Center. “We’re excited to partner with Molina to help current and future Petersburg students succeed.”
