Tips to help you cope with wildfires and poor air quality

Person using asthma inhaler.

As wildfires continue to burn, sensitive groups such as persons with asthma, and COPD, are at a higher risk of health problems when exposed to wildfire smoke.  Children and older adults can also have more problems from smoke and ash.

What you can do to protect your and your children’s lung health:

  • Go to a safer area - if possible, go to a place with cleaner air until your home air is safe again.
  • Use an air purifier - an air purifier with a HEPA filter can lower some indoor air pollution.
  • Stay indoors – if you cannot leave the area, keep your windows and doors closed to keep polluted air from coming into your home.
  • Limit outdoor activities – stay indoors as much as possible. Avoid strenuous activity. If you must go outside, wear a fitted mask (see below).
  • Wear a fitted mask - a fitted face mask such as an N95 mask may help reduce the amount of smoke particles you breathe in. (How to use your N95 respirator)
  • Keep car windows closed – when driving, set the ventilation system to recirculate the air.
  • Use your asthma medication –Follow your Asthma Action Plan/use your rescue inhaler (short-acting bronchodilator) as soon as symptoms appear. Call your healthcare provider if you have any questions.
