Telehealth Services

Get Care From the Comfort of Your Home or Anywhere

When you are unable to travel to your doctor’s office, telehealth (receiving care by phone or video communication) is a useful service. Many clinics are starting to offer this service—without having to physically visit your doctor’s office. During a telehealth visit you can discuss symptoms and medical issues, receive a diagnosis, discuss treatment options, and get a prescription from your doctor. You also may be able to complete preventive visits like annual well-care and well-child visits via telehealth. Plus, your doctor may be able to monitor some of your medical conditions during a telehealth visit.

Learn more about telehealth visits from your doctor

  • Ask your doctor if they offer telehealth services.
  • Find out if a telehealth visit is a good choice for your or your child’s health condition.
  • Ask your doctor’s office how to schedule a telehealth visit and what equipment you may need to have ready (such as a landline phone, smartphone and/or internet connection).

Setup for a telehealth visit

  • You will need a landline phone, smartphone, or a device with an internet connection and audio-video capabilities, like a tablet or computer with a webcam. Make sure whatever device you plan to use has enough battery life before the telehealth visit.
  • Check your email or smartphone for instructions. Be sure to review any email, texts, or other communication from your doctor's office with details about your upcoming appointment and how to use their telehealth technology.
  • Some providers may require you to download an app or register on their patient portal before the visit. Please make sure to complete these steps and test your camera and/or sound at least one day before your telehealth appointment.
  • If you are using a smartphone, tablet, or computer, close all your other applications. Some applications will slow down your internet connection. Even if your connection is strong, closing these other programs will cut down on distractions.
  • Find a comfortable place to sit for the visit. If you are having a video visit, make sure your camera gives the provider a clear view of you.

Preparing for your telehealth visit

  • Choose a private location with plenty of light, and limited background noise and distractions.
  • Make a list of your current medications and your symptoms, as well as any questions or concerns you want to discuss during the appointment. If your doctor has requested information like your temperature or weight, have this information ready, too.
  • Take notes and ask questions if something is unclear.
  • Log in to your appointment at least 15 minutes before the appointment time, or as early as your doctor has asked you to arrive.

Tips if you are having trouble logging in to your telehealth appointment

  • Restart your computer or device. Make sure the device is plugged in and charged.
  • Check that the internet connection is working and is strong enough to work with the telehealth platform. Close all other applications.
  • Update your internet browser if the telehealth platform is web-based.
